Tina Maira-Drahus has style in her blood.
Her uncle, Sam Maira, once owned a men’s clothing shop at 16 S. Main St. called Sam Maira’s Style Creators.
Just a few doors down, Maira-Drahus and her husband Joe recently opened Vintage Vogue, a designer consignment store at 12 S. Main St.
Maira-Drahus, a West Wyoming resident and Pittston AreaHigh School graduate, said she learned about clothing from her mother, who worked in her uncle’s store.
“(My mother) always taught me how to buy clothes and classic styles that will withstand the test of time,” she said. “That’s what she taught me, classic styles. I have some things that I’ve had for a lot of years, but they’re in great shape, they look good and I can still wear them.”
Vintage Vogue, which officially opened April 30, offers higher-end designer items such as clothes, purses, shoes, jewelry, dresses, sunglasses, watches and more at prices lower than retail.
Maira-Drahus said all merchandise is obtained via consignment.
“If the people are repurposing their items, instead of giving them away, they bring them in here,” she said. “When someone consigns with us, we have them sign a consignment agreement. They leave their items with us and when they sell, on a monthly basis we issue checks to the consigner”
The storefront has three rooms — one that displays merchandise for sale, one that has couches and a fitting room, and a lounge room with couches, a TV, Wi-Fi for lap tops and hand-held electronics, and a refrigerator stocked with water and soda.
“My husband doesn’t like to shop,” said Maira-Drahus. “So, we thought how nice it would be for the guys to sit and watch TV… especially on Saturdays. And we also have coffee, water and snacks.”
The storefront of Vintage Vogue was vacant for five years before Maira-Drahus rented it from the city. She said the space was in rough shape, and it took four years to complete renovations.
Her brother, Charles Maira, who is a partner with Ikon.5 Architects in New Jersey, did the building and lighting design.
The construction revealed some of the storefront’s classic charm.
“We were talking about putting a hardwood floor in,” she said. “Once they pulled the carpeting up, I asked our contractor (Jud Spencer, Sr. from Spencer’s General Construction and Painting) about redoing these floors. It saved us a fortune from having to replace the floors and it actually gives it a really nice feel.”
She looks forward to being part of Main Street in Pittston and contributing to the economic growth of the city, while at the same time bringing something new.
“I didn’t want this to be a typical consignment store where you walk in and there’s rows and rows of clutter,” Maira-Drahus said. “I wanted it to have that boutique feel where people feel like they’re coming some place special, and give them something different.”
